Bangladesh Consulate General in Toronto, Canada on 21 December 2019, Saturday organized a colourful cultural evening to celebrate the 49th Glorious Victory Day. Toronto based Bangladeshi cultural groups Udichi Shilpi Ghoshthi, Nrittokola, Bachonik and Sukonna Nrittangon performed an array of patriotic songs and poetry depicting the glorious and painstaking journey of Bangladesh towards the independence under the leadership of Father of Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman. High Officials of the Ontario Province Government, Diplomats based in Toronto, Toronto Awami League Leaders, freedom fighters, the Bangladeshi Diaspora Community, Consulate officials and their family members attended the celebration.

The celebration began with paying homage to the Father of Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman and the Liberation War martyrs. Victory Day messages from Hon’ble President, Hon’ble Prime Minister, Hon’ble Foreign Minister, and Hon’ble State Minister for Foreign Affairs were read out by the officers of the Consulate General. Consul General Nayem Uddin Ahmed delivered the welcome speech. Freedom fighters, Toronto Awami League leaders, eminent Bangladeshi personalities living in Toronto also spoke on the occasion. Later, a documentary titled “How we achieved freedom” was screened.
In his remarks, Consul General Nayem Ahmed told that 16 December is our greatest achievement and he remembered with profound respect the charismatic leadership of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman in the journey to our independence. He also remembered the invaluable contribution of the freedom fighters and 3 million martyrs. On the occasion of this day, Consul General urged all Bangladeshi Nationals to remain committed to the dream of Father of Nation for “Sonar Bangla”, which his able daughter Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has been taking forward to.
Nayem Ahmed told the audience that under the leadership of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina Bangladesh has become a “Development Miracle” and “Role Model”, with impressive GDP growth of 8.15% and other socio-economic developments. We are now on the verge of graduating from Least Developed Country Status to Middle Income Country Status in 2021 and present Government has set a target to turn Bangladesh into a Developed country by 2041. Every Bangladeshi national should remain committed to these visions and work unitedly from the respective areas in tandem with present government’s “vision-2021 & 2041”. He also thanked the Bangladeshi diasporas in Toronto and other provinces for their continued efforts to showcase Bangladeshi culture and tradition in Canada.
Earlier on 16 December 2019, Consul General Nayem Uddin Ahmed hoisted the national flag at Bangladesh House to mark the beginning of the celebration of the 49th Glorious Victory Day-2019. Victory messages were read out and special prayers were offered in homage to Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman and the martyrs of the 1971 War of Liberation as well as for continued peace and progress of Bangladesh. It was followed by a discussion on the significance of the day presided over by the Consul General Nayem Uddin Ahmed.
